Digital Literacy of Rural Women in India: A Study of Google’s “Helping Women Get Online” Initiative.


Despite the growing penetration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in developing countries including India, the benefits of such improved access are only captured by a certain segment of society equipped with digital literacy. The gender divide and urban-rural divide are among the most striking. In rural India, only 3 out of every 10 internet users are women. This paper aims to shed light on the digital literacy training programs for rural women by examining an exemplary program under Digital India, Google’s Helping Women Get Online Initiative..
