Meet the team

 

Education is a fundamental unit to development & overall well being. It is a key driver of economic and social mobility within a society. As Malcom X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. It is therefore essential that we study education, and more specifically, how access to it may be unequal to identify the barriers keeping groups – girls, children from ethnic minorities or migrant communities, children with disabilities, at risk youth – from attaining quality education like their peers. The fourth Sustainable Development Goal focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Despite the considerable progress on the provision of inclusive education over the past years, more than one-fourth million children and youth aged 6 to 17 were still out of school in 2017, and more than half of children and adolescents are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics. We believe education presents the opportunity to strengthen the institutions and has the potential to unlock the prevailing poverty and inequality. History bears testament to the fact that education has been the driving force that has enabled any great change.

Hence contributing to research towards provision of inclusive and equitable education shall be the focus of our research team. Our team shall not only bring into highlight the existing inequalities towards the attainment of education but also aim to answer the question of how to establish structures & improve the current ecosystem to build an inclusive educational system. We hope our research will initiate a dialogue to create a learning environment for all irrespective of one’s caste, colour and creed.

Publications

An outlook on Migrant and Refugee children’s access to Education in France

The paper aims at analysing the situation of migrant and refugee children’s access to education in France. While a fundamental right, guaranteed both by international and domestic law, in practice access to education for migrant and refugee children are limited by strict immigration policies and the French educational system, which fails to include migrant and refugee children by addressing their specific needs. The paper highlights how the lack of educational opportunities at the upper-secondary level negatively impact unaccompanied minors, who are often beyond the scope of national compulsory education. The paper concludes by providing policy recommendations focusing on monitoring & evaluation indicators to improve migrant and refugee children’s access to education.
